On 18 August 1822, Frederick Clissold, Joseph-Marie Couttet, David Couttet, Jacques Couttet, Pierre-Marie Favret, Jean-Baptiste Simond and Matthieu Bossonney reached the summit of Mont Blanc from Courmayeur (4,765 m) for the first time, descending from the main summit. The first direct ascent of this peak took place 55 years later, on 30 and 31 July 1877, by James Eccles together with the guides Michel Payot and Alphonse Payot, during the first ascent of the Peuterey ridges.
